No More Drug War-40 Years of a Failed War On Drugs
This June marks forty years since the U.S. government declared a “war” on illegal drug use and abuse. Over the next few weeks, Partnership for Safety and Justice will be looking at the current state of this war and highlight some of the unintended consequences that this policy approach has had on our society. We will also examine options that exist for changing the way the U.S. approaches addiction and drug use, as well as local, national and international successes in reforming drug policies.
Our intent is to provoke a conversation and much overdue critical examination of a policy that has resulted in untold costs in terms of lives and dollars. Our hope in doing this is to advance the movement to address addiction in a more effective way and by doing so, ensure our communities are both safer and healthier.
Check back here each week as we explore the following topics:
- Week 1 - Brief Overview of the War on Drugs
- Week 2 - One Viable Solution: A Comprehensive Public Health Approach to Addiction
- Week 3 - Continuing the Discussion: A Comprehesive Public Health Approach to Addiction
