Our primary focus is the prevention of future crime and violence.
We are committed to addressing the root causes of violence.
This requires developing an analysis that allows us to examine the complex reasons violence exists.
In order to address the root causes of violence, we must make connections across communities and issues.
We recognize the value of every human being.
We have an inclusive view of who a victim is.
We recognize that anyone can be a survivor of violence or crime, and this includes people who have experienced the types of violence often un-acknowledged and unaddressed by our justice system (e.g., police violence).
We know from experience that, more often than not, people who have committed crimes are also people who have suffered from crime and violence.
We do not see crime survivors' rights and defendants’ rights as oppositional.
We will not advocate one group’s rights over the other.
We support the concept of Parallel Justice.
Parallel Justice: a system in which the needs of survivors and criminal procedures are handled separately. In this system survivors could receive the services they needed to cope and thrive after an incident of violence regardless of whether they report or prosecute.
This document is part of a larger framework intended to inform our work based on an analysis by progressive survivors of violence and crime.
