NV: State urged to move license plate production out of prison
Mention the production of license plates to people outside prison, and they’ll often immediately associate that job with prisoners. Prisoners have been making Nevada’s license plates since 1928, but the director of the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles is requesting that the license plate making facility be moved outside of the prison. She says it would save the state $600,000 a year, but, in the end, it may cost incarcerated people because each license plate bought comes with a fifty cent fee that goes into prison industries and prison programs. In order to move the facility, new legislation is required, but, so far, none has been drafted.
