Death Penalty

At a time when people have been found innocent and freed from death row, when evidence is surfacing that innocent people have been executed, the U.S. Attorney General is drafting rules that would lead to faster executions.

OADP works for the repeal of the death penalty by promoting research, education, and discussion relating to the death penalty. They have members across the state of Oregon, and have been working since 1984, when they were founded as "The Oregon Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty." Besides education efforts,

The habeas corpus petition of Clinton Wendell Cunningham was filed in Portland at the US District Courthouse in October. This will be the first time the federal court will fully review Oregon’s death penalty law.

The United States House of Representatives and Senate are trying to agree on different versions of the bill that re-authorizes the USA Patriot Act. Both sides have yet to agree on provisions that would increase the scope of the federal death penalty, including a House proposal to triple the number of federal crimes that qualify for the death penalty and other proposals increasing the likelihood that a death sentence will be imposed.
