OR DOC and JDI Partner to Stop Rape in Prison
The Oregon Department of Corrections and Just Detention International (JDI -formerly Stop Prisoner Rape) have entered into a partnership to develop policies and practices, educational materials and trainings with the goal of stopping rape and sexual abuse in Oregon’s prisons.
This work is in response to the 2003 Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA). PREA requires states track data related to rape and sexual assault in prison and to follow a set of national standards. The draft version of the standards will be released on June 23, and the U. S. Attorney General has a year to issue a rule making the standards a national requirement. Following that, state governors have another year to make sure they implement the rules at the state level.
Oregon’s Department of Corrections began working with the non-profit human rights organization Just Detention International in 2008 to develop standards and practices that might serve as a model for other states implementing the national standards at a later date.
