Letters to the editor: Drug treatment
Save by spending
I congratulate The Oregonian's editorial board for letting the public know about the pressing need for addiction treatment ("Good luck with that drug addiction," April 7).
I have recently bought a house in Portland and look forward to moving in as soon as my house in Connecticut is sold. I am shocked to learn that my new state, so progressive on many issues, is not helping people with addiction problems.
Every state is trying to save money. One way to save is to send non-violent offenders -- many of whom have substance abuse issues -- to less costly treatment rather than a very expensive prison cell.
Another way to save is to address drug and alcohol problems in the community before desperate individuals turn to crime for drugs or endanger other people while intoxicated.

Mother's perspective
I am writing to you as the mother of a child who was able to get treatment for drug addiction through Central City Concern's drug and alcohol program.
Because my child was able to obtain treatment that included lots of counseling as well as medical treatment and mentorship, he is alive and well, working full-time and raising a child as a single parent.
No amount of jail time would have gotten this result. Stop putting helpless victims and sick people in jail.
