DEQ Issues $4,675 Penalty to the Oregon Department of Corrections
The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality has issued a $4,675 civil penalty to the Oregon Department of Corrections for violations of hazardous waste regulations at the Oregon Corrections Enterprises facility in Salem at 2605 State St.
DEQ issued the penalty because the Department of Corrections failed to follow regulations in identifying and handling hazardous waste at the facility, and failed to ensure that employees and inmate workers are trained in proper hazardous waste management and emergency procedure requirements.
When determining the amount of the civil penalty, DEQ considered the efforts of the Department of Corrections to correct the violations and prevent future violations through instituting training and audit practices.
The Department of Corrections has until August 27 to appeal the penalty, or the penalty will become due.
