Seattle, Portland, and parts of Alaska will issue electronic ankle bracelets to some immigrants facing deportation. The thick black band and attached box must be worn at all times. Only people who are not facing criminal charges and who are determined by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Office to have strong employment and community ties will be allowed to participate. Seattle immigration attorney Cletus M. Weber said, “It seems a less-worse alternative. I’d think if people had the option of being in jail or being tracked by Big Brother, most would choose the alternative to jail so they can be with their kids.”
