Action: Call Your Legislator about HB 3508
You are receiving this special call to action because the vote of your state Representative is critical to passing smart cost-saving reforms. This vote will come soon – possibly as soon as tomorrow morning.
You have received PSJ Action Alerts about HB 2335, an omnibus criminal justice bill that includes a number of smart and important cost-saving reforms. HB 2335 has been rolled into another bill, HB 3508, which includes all of the smart cost-saving reforms along with some sentencing enhancements. The sentencing enhancements were added to try to get the Republican votes needed to pass the cost-saving reforms. HB 3508 still includes:
- Delaying implementation of Measure 57 for 2½ years
- Increased earned time eligibility for some non-M11 people from 20% to 30%
- Earned time for people on probation
- Reduction of re-incarceration for technical probation violations
If HB 3508 does not pass, funding for a number of critical services will be cut, including: drug courts; victim services; the Oregon Youth Authority; public defense services; and Department of Corrections programs.
HB 3508 will have a work session in the Public Safety Subcommittee today at 2 pm. We anticipate it will have a work session later today in the full Ways and Means Committee. It is likely to be on the House floor for a vote as early as tomorrow, Friday June 19th.
Please call or email your Representative today to ask him or her to support HB 3508.
