Thank you for attending Lobby Day, PSJ’s statewide gathering or both. We are excited about the work we can do together and hope you can join us this Monday, April 27th at the Capitol for an informational hearing on Second Look for Youth.
Things happen quickly in a legislative session. We have made a decision to only push Second Look – of the two bills we had filed, Second Look has not only proven to be effective, but would also save money. In this economic climate, that is huge. Due to the political climate around criminal justice reform in Oregon, we now know that the only way for Second Look to pass is by having it included as a part of an omnibus bill that includes multiple criminal justice reform policies. That bill is currently being drafted. Senate Bill 682 will no longer be the vehicle that moves Second Look through the legislative process.
In the meantime, we are working to build momentum around Second Look and are holding an informational hearing on Monday, April 27th in front of the House Judiciary Committee. The time will either be at 12 noon or 1 pm. You are invited to attend. It will be a short hearing where we have been given 15 minutes to provide testimony in support and the opposition has been given the same. This is not a typical public hearing – it’s informational only and an opportunity we will use it to educate the freshman legislators and those new to the committee about Second Look. There will not be time given to public testimony.
It will be important, however, for us to show that Second Look has strong support and your presence in the room will make a difference. If you can attend, please let me know. I would like to say a few words in my testimony about who has come in support of Second Look.
