Krump is a conscious lifestyle that incorporates pro-social attitudes and beliefs and encourages individual and community growth. As a dance form, Krump represents an effective method of confronting both internal and external conflicts in a positive, non-victimizing way. The movement began in the ghettos of Los Angeles in 2005 and has served as a successful alternative to gangs and violence in urban areas around the world.

Krumping became popular at MacLaren Youth Correctional Facility between 2006 and 2009. It was seen as something positive and acceptable and as a means to release anger in a nonviolent way. A culture of consciousness, of creativity, of non-violence began to form in response to the development of the movement on campus.
