Thousands of Needs Met, but Thousands More Left Unanswered
June 9, 2010
In 2009, Oregon’s domestic and sexual violence programs provided life-saving services to thousands of Oregonians. The amount of work provided is inspiring:
- 165,991 help line calls answered
- 2,835 adults, 309 teens and 2,022 children sheltered
- 98 percent of people sheltered for more than 5 days engaged in safety planning
- 24,428 adults and 3,109 children received community-based services (such as hospital accompaniment and support groups)
- more than 75,055 people were reached through community education and awareness events
Unfortunately, a great need was left unmet. Because of a lack of funding, 19,506 adults’ requests for shelter could not be met in 2009. People who could not access safe shelter were forced to remain in—or return to—dangerous situations at home, or they faced homelessness.
For years, PSJ has advocated on behalf of domestic and sexual violence survivors and we continue to work to increase survivors’ access to life-saving services. Please contact Kerry Naughton if you would like to join our efforts.
Services Can Save Lives
If you or someone you know is being physically, emotionally, sexually, or financially abused by their partner and you are able to safely make phone calls, please contact your local program or the National Domestic Violence Hotline (1.800.799.SAFE). Even if shelter is not available at this time, an advocate at your local program can help you develop a personalized safety plan for you and your children.
