    Prisons Rethink Isolation, Saving Money, Lives and Sanity

    More inmates are held in solitary confinement in the USA than in any other democratic nation. Some officials have been persuaded by research suggesting that isolation is vastly overused and that it does little to reduce overall prison violence (The New York Times).

    Dementia in prisons is an underreported but fast-growing phenomenon that is an unforeseen consequence of tough-on-crime policies -- long sentences have created a large population of aging prisoners.

     

    Prison Mental Health Unit Not Designed For Treatment

    Oregon is finishing a brand new mental health hospital - but the inmates with some of the most severe mental health problems are housed at Oregon State Penitentiary, which isn't designed for treatment. (OPB)
